Hello everyone, and a Happy Labour Day Weekend to you!
Labour Day was declared a legal holiday by the Parliament of Canada on July 23rd, 1894. The celebration was moved to the early fall, where it has remained ever since.1
September 1st 2024 also marks the five-month anniversary of The Seaboard Review.
August has been an interesting month. While not a lot happens on the publishing front over the summer, the fall titles are pouring in, and we at TSR are anticipating many interesting reviews ahead.2
Waiting in the wings at TSR:
an interview with author Nora Gold,
a conversation between authors Emily Weedon and Larry Gaudet,
reviews by Alison Manley, Ian Colford and myself
our popular “Throwback Thursday” post
and much more!
Several new contributors have joined TSR, most recently Naomi MacKinnon3. Naomi and I go back quite a few years. She has had her book review blog, Consumed by Ink, since 2013, and it was her site which inspired me to start my first site in 2015.
I will be introducing the other new contributors as their reviews roll in.
In Other News
Recently, the new owners of my former website posted some discouraging statements about me on their Facebook page to raise money for their site.4 A TSR Team member alerted me to the post and I shared it on FB to let others know that their statements were inaccurate. The outpouring of support was overwhelming as those who knew me came to my defence. I understand the original post was soon pulled. At any rate, it had a positive effect on the stats here at TSR. Free and paid subscriptions are up, and one former contributor to that site resigned and came over to TSR. As such, we have 13 “team” and “TSR Contributors” now.
My Thanks Goes To:
I want to especially thank all those (here on Substack and social media) who “like” and share my posts. The word about TSR is spreading!
As the word spreads, more independent, small-press publishers are reaching out. Thank you for the review copies (print and PDF)!
TSR is a happy, safe place for contributors and readers alike. I want to personally thank you all for being a part of this new endeavour of mine.
We at TSR hope you had a good summer, and while it is only over “unofficially” in the Northern Hemisphere, we are anticipating a great Fall reading experience.
Cheers,
James M. Fisher, editor-in-chief
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labour_Day_(Canada) Also, an old-fashioned tradition in Canada and the United States is frowning upon the wearing of white after Labour Day. Explanations for this tradition vary; the most common is that white is a summer colour and Labour Day unofficially marks the end of summer.

You didn't choose the review life, the review life chose you! Happy 5 months!
Congratulations.
